The main focus of the career stage models that have been identified thus far lies on academic careers although the terminology sometimes suggests a broader focus. Academic careers are conceptualized as progressing through four stages from junior to senior. Junior roles involve training and conducting research on topics chosen by others. Senior roles involve leaderships, choosing research topics and designing research questions to be addressed. There are four models of research career stages defined by different dimensions.
